Boiler Scrappage Scheme for Scotland
The Scottish Government has announced a new Boiler Scrappage Scheme for Scotland, targeting households with old, inefficient boilers.
With £2 million allocated to the scheme, it is expected that up to 5,000 households will benefit. Matching the English equivalent of the scheme, homes with a band G boiler, as listed on the SEDBUK scale, will qualify for a £400 contribution towards the cost of a new, energy efficient boiler.
Announcing details of the scheme, Housing and Communities Minister Alex Neil said: “Through the boiler scrappage scheme we will help people replace inefficient old boilers for new energy saving models and importantly, put money back into the pockets of householders.
“At the same time we are providing an economic stimulus for the heating industry, supporting jobs and helping the industry get through this financially difficult time.”
How the scheme works
From Monday 24th May 2010 applicants will be able to apply for a voucher by calling 0800 512 012, or going online to the Energy Saving Trust Website.
Operated by the Scottish Government’s Energy Saving Scotland advice network, the vouchers will be issued on a first come, first serve basis and the scheme will last until all funds have been allocated. Upon completion of the new boiler installation, the vouchers can be redeemed for cash by registered Gas Safe and CLE or SNIPEF installers.
The new boiler must be a high efficiency model, certified under the Energy Saving Recommended Scheme, like the A-rated Greenstar range from Worcester, Bosch Group, which come with an additional one year guarantee when you register the voucher’s unique reference number.*
SNIPEF Director Robert Burgon said: “The Scottish boiler scrappage scheme will be a great opportunity for many households to upgrade their inefficient heating systems which will be costing them many hundreds of pounds each year in wasted fuel costs.
“Installing a new system will not only help the environment it will also help save up to £190 each year on their heating bills.
“Like many other industries the plumbing and heating sector has been badly hit by the recession and the scheme will give a boost to many of our members businesses.”
The Boiler Scrappage Scheme in Scotland supports the aims of the Scottish Government’s forthcoming Energy Efficient Action Plan for Scotland, which will set out a suite of policies and programmes to help reduce energy consumption across all sectors.
