In which type of properties can heat pumps be installed?

Heat pumps are typically best suited to new-build properties.

However, it is possible to retro-fit a heat pump into an existing property - it’ll certainly help reduce your reliance on gas, natural gas or oil.

Important considerations

Insulation

Insulation will need to be as air tight as possible in the property - at least up to or preferably exceeding Building Regulations. This includes the attic, dampers in open fires, cavity wall insulation and double or even triple glazing installed.

Space for the compressor unit

You’ll also need space for the unit - a utility room, basement or garage for example.

Space for groundwork (for ground source heat pumps)

Finally, for ground source heat pumps you will need adequate land space for ground collectors.

Ask an installer

If you’re interested in how suitable your property is for heat pumps please contact a qualified installer.
