Meet Bethany from Custom Heat
Name: Bethany Jenkins
Company: Custom Heat
Location: Rugby
Apprentice of the Year winner, Bethany, spoke to us about her journey towards becoming a gas engineer. From working in care to getting hands on with boilers, Bethany spoke to us about her experience as a female apprentice in the industry. We want to spotlight Bethany for her dedication and how it’s never too late for a career change!
Look at what she had to say:
When did you begin your apprenticeship?
I started my apprenticeship in September 2021. I thoroughly enjoyed working in care and feeling like I was making a difference to someone’s life, however, I had a hunger for something more, something more hands on, and something that would test me. After completing my college course, I wasn’t sure I’d ever be able to make it into the industry, but luckily Custom Heat made that a reality.
What kind of products have you been learning to install?
A range of Worcester Bosch boilers, air con units, and heat pumps.
Have you got a favourite Worcester Bosch product?
I like the Greenstar CDi Compact as it’s small, light and easy to manoeuvre!
What do you think the future of the heating industry looks like?
I think it looks positive, there is never going to be a shortage in people needing heating engineers and with the renewable era taking off it can only get better. I also hope to see some more females in it!
You won the HPM award for apprentice of the year, how did you feel when you heard the news?
I was speechless. It was a complete surprise. I just felt so honoured to receive such recognition especially as an apprentice gas engineer as the apprenticeship route can be challenging at times.
Looking after your mental and physical health is important, what do you do to keep yourself feeling good?
I try to take full advantage of my weekends by spending it with loved ones and doing things that I enjoy doing.
Do you have any advice for other young females who are looking to do this as a career?
Take the leap, you won’t regret it. I was so nervous when I first started and it was all male engineers, but they made me feel so welcome and accepted, not just them but everyone in the industry I’ve come across.
