"Holistic" heat in buildings proposals "can make a significant cumulative impact"

  • Government proposes new approach to domestic heating and energy efficiency
  • Heat in Buildings  consultation ended in January
  • Scheme praised for “realistic and practical” approach
  • Proposals made by the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) in its Heat in Buildings consultation have been welcomed in principle by our Director of Marketing and Technical Support, Martyn Bridges for the rounded approach they take toward heating control.

According to Martyn, the suggested increase in minimum boiler efficiency - and the mandatory status of controls - are the most practical and realistic energy proposals put forward by the Government for some time.

He commented: “It’s pleasing to see BEIS recognise that gas boilers are still the most efficient and cost effective way to heat the vast majority of our homes. By taking this stance, it has the potential to offer a much more holistic approach to heating control, which in turn could make a real difference to energy efficiency and comfort levels in homes around the country.

“Rather than aiming for radical change, the Heat in Buildings consultation focuses on the real low-hanging fruit of ensuring homes are sufficiently equipped with heating controls. With numerous studies having demonstrated the long-term financial and comfort benefits of well-matched heating controls, making a timer and a room thermostat mandatory is sure to make a significant cumulative impact. That being said, there are also a few oversights and missed opportunities within the proposals, which we will be feeding back through our consultation response.

“The proposals may be open for consultation at present, but the fact that the Government has identified a practical way to drive heating performance up and energy bills down is very encouraging indeed.”
