Did you know...

... From April 2005 all new gas boilers installed in homes had to be condensing (A or B rated), with a minimum requirement of an 86% efficiency rating? And then from October 2010 it was mandated that all condensing boilers had to be A-rated, meaning a minimum of 90% efficiency. These regulations were put in place to improve energy efficiency in homes and buildings.

Historically, boilers could be as low as G-rated which meant they were less than 70% efficient. Imagine the savings your customers are getting from swapping out low-rated boilers for A-rated boilers!

To understand boiler ratings better, ErP Directive (Energy Related Products) created a scale to label boilers with ratings between A++ and G as shown in the image.

“I remember the period before the 1st April 2005 when discussions with civil servants started about introducing a minimum efficiency for boilers of 82%. This was back in the day a SEDBUK Band C rating, a level of efficiency that couldn’t be achieved without the appliance condensing."

"There were quite a few manufacturers who fought against this at the time whilst we decided to embrace it and got the go ahead from Bosch to develop a suite of appliances that didn’t just meet this Band C efficiency, we wanted to do better, so we developed a range of A-Rated appliances. We had Combi, Regular and System boilers all looking similar in their industrial design launched in Q1 2005 before the deadline."

"Within around 18 months our market share in boilers had risen by 10 full market share points, an unprecedented growth with the manufacturers who were arguing against the mandate losing share to us."

"This piece of legislation still remains the most effective carbon reducing exercise that has been implemented in the heating market in the UK.” - Martyn Bridges, Director of External Affairs
